Well, Ashraf's warning about Webb is appropriate, I don't like some of these calls at all!

Hi Ashraf,

I had placed a small bet during the Q-finals for Holland to win the cup, any which way it will provide for an exiting evening.... GO HOLLAND!!!

Ashraf, thanks for the insights about Webb, I had no idea regarding his officiating mistakes in the Premier League! Not good to hear, when we've seen so many officiating errors have a huge impact on some games this world cup. He has an interesting game in front of him, with the Dutch penchant for roughing up players and the Spaniards having a very clean tournament. It will indeed be interesting to see if van bommel gets a red card finally and radically changes the balance of power.

Qiman thks for those insights on Dutch team

Bojan I v much agree abount Vanbommel. the passing of Xavi and Iniesta might get him so enraged that he might provoke the red card.

As for Howard Webb, he may seem calm and cool but the mistakes he made during this year's Premier League games are scandalous. And the red cards he was supposed to give to Switzerlands last defender against Spain and those unrewarded penalties were ridiculous.

Nonprophet, Paul the octopus was ONLY effectively tested during Germany games. But yes, Spainwill be very very tough and could prove my prediction wrong.

Ashraf, I like your take on the game Sunday

I would just like to add that Netherlands has the most fouls committed on this tournament (15 yellow cards) and Spain has the least (3). translation of this statistic is that Spaniards have the ball in their possession most of the time, and Dutch always have to "fight" for it. In case of a strict referee this might be a deciding factor in the game. In this match I think that Van Bommel and his style of play might be liability for the Dutch. I bet that referee knows about these stats, and they just "might" interfere with Dutch ruff play.

Germany - Uruguay match tomorrow, I think will go in favor of Uruguay. Main driver will be the desire of Uruguay to place itself in 3rd spot. Germans came to tournament wanting the first place, since that is gone, there is no real motivation for the win.

either way, I am glad that both teams Spain & Holland will have their first title.

Qiman, thanks for the articles, however the big matchup is the prognostications of our two favorite oracles.
Paul The Octopus versus our FX hero Ashraf.
Paul picks Spain while Ashraf picks Holland - Dear oh Dear what's a Futbol fan to do?
Dare we bet against the mighty Ashraf?
I'll take Spain because they trust each other -
Well fellow board members who do you like?

Great article on spain and world cup:

In the minds of many Spaniards here, there will perhaps be no bigger "stress test" than the one that's coming on Sunday when virtually the entire country will grind to a halt to watch 'La Roja' take on Holland for the World Cup title.

Forget the housing crisis, unemployment, the downgrades, the slumping growth, the metro strikes, the pay cuts, and the finger-wagging over debt by the International Monetary Fund and others, or the hamstrung government. Spain, which has never made it to the finals of the World Cup before, is in the throes of the biggest sporting event in history for the country, and perhaps one of the biggest marketing events since the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

"It's more important than the economy, than potatoes, than olive oil, than (worker) strikes," said Eduardo Lorenzo Conde, a retired Madrid worker, who adds that he prefers bullfights to football. Conde, who gathers with other older men at a south Madrid train station near his home each morning to chat and read the newspapers, said everyone here has a need for Spain to win.

Interesting article on the Dutch team:

Dutch football has long been this way. Gaunt, rakish Johan Cruyff, the Jedi-like fulcrum of 1974's Total Football team, challenged authority everywhere he found it, famously demanding a tailor-made Dutch uniform with just two stripes instead of three, because he was sponsored by Puma and the jerseys were made by adidas. In 1994, ESPN's own Ruud Gullit ditched the team after arguing with his coach about the appropriate strategies to cope with the blazing heat of summer in the United States. The side's 1996 Euro campaign was famously undermined when a leaked photograph shockingly revealed all but one of the team's black players ate at a separate table. The Dutch story always has been one of preternatural talent meshed with petulance and arrogance, and you do not have to probe too deeply to see it in this 2010 squad.
