I agree with that. I spent 33 yrs working my b*lls off only to fall prey to bad government. Working SMART is the key.

We drift from the original discussion of how to get the UK long term unemployed lazy brigade back to long term WORK---even if the jobs we find them only start with a sad 40 hrs/week. How to provide enough new jobs for our young people at the end of their education. So many easy jobs are taken by immigrants there is no work left for the lazy army brigade.

If we discard a load of EU human rights b/s, control our borders including EU migration, apply the laws nature--you work or you starve--take your choice, I think we could resolve much of our problem. The social security and health costs in UK would plummet

harder and longer is good ....in one particular respect but working harder and longer is not the key to success....see Sisyphos myth...

when i was in uni, UK students pay 2k fees but foreigner like me pay 11k, my sis pay 17k. i have met some hard work british students, but most muslins and asians work even harder. uni cant make people work hard or clever imho.

20k salary after tax, that amount can hire 4 top talents in china. and in most day-to-day work how could 1 competent 10? we all human, not monkey.

thus, hopeless in next 20 yrs. and maybe some hope after china lost 2 decades. just heard this morning, china total labour amount decrease in 2012, a good sign for western.

also there is silver lining, iphone is designed by british man but in US. and my teddy is designed and made in UK(but many fake copys on sale in local post office).

Very rarely i used public commuters. But recently I did as heavy snowfall blocked road traffic. Well ALL
those students fumbled their ipods and smartphones...
no one prepared for job or school or university lessons. Well honestly....as we were students riding a train or bus we made a lot of nonsense...but after some time we came back to understanding and learning.
A teacher was wrong a prof was wrong...no no you misunderstood he's been correct...no wrong...well lets examine that...and so on.
Not a miracle but a consequence when asia soon passes
Europe UK and so on.

Yes you are right Q but how do we solve this problem by having our borders wide open to immigrants. The Lazy in UK can defy the laws of nature. Also I think uni fees should be free to students who have responded to the demands of industry and commerce. If they choose the sciences rather than the arts and finance etc they have a free ride through their education and a job at the end of it all.

Whenever UK have a recession apprenticeships are the first thing to get the axe by companies looking to become leaner. High quality apprenticeships are every bit as essential as university placings. Therefore they need some subsidisation. We don't need all the emphasis upon uni, practical skills and a diploma are just as important.

yap, honourable and very polite gentlemen. honda s2000 is my dream car except old mini!

i think the problem for UK is high labour cost, and trouble youngs, lazy. only asians can work 12 hr per day 7 days a week.

And at that time the UK government was full of wets who couldn't stand up to Maggie dreadie. She thought she was the queen, daughter of a greengrocery corner shop with corner shop mentality. Lord Michael Hezeltine was the only cabinet minister to stand up to her. He was a politician who actually had business experience, a rare breed of politician indeed.
