DJ UK Osborne: Inflation Is Clearly A Big Challenge
15-fvr.-2011
BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--Accelerating U.K. inflation is clearly a "big challenge," U.K. Treasury chief George Osborne said Tuesday, but he expressed "complete confidence" in Bank of England Governor Mervyn King to tackle the problem.
"Clearly inflation is a big challenge," he said in a round of television interviews at the end of the monthly meeting of European Union finance ministers in Brussels. He said it was a difficulty in many countries right now.
Osborne said the Monetary Policy Committee's 2% inflation objective is a "valuable target," despite official data Tuesday showing consumer prices rose 4% over the last year.
On King, Osborne said he has "complete confidence in him and in our independent Monetary Policy Committee."
He reiterated that the government would maintain its deficit-reduction efforts, which would give "more space" to the MPC to keep interest rates lower for longer.
Osborne also said the government is "determined to take action" on Egypt's request to freeze the assets of some former officials from President Hosni Mubarak's regime.
He said he is hopeful the EU can agree joint action on asset freezing and move to provide financial aid to country.
