Ferdinand Lips mentioned gold in those old days as reference currency, i.e. as a price standard gauge,not as a national currency. Consequently a particular gold coin bought everywhere in old europe the same quantity and quality of goods, independent of the price in local national currency. This is quite amazing and worth to think deeper about.

Putko, it was WB pres Zoellick who talked about Gold as ref currency and not the IMF pres. don't confuse gold as ref currency part of basket and moving into fullfledged gold standard.
