As for "free mkts" I seem to remember Greenspan controlling equities. 2002/03 was the change point imho.

Well caters, lets see if my 5th Jan usdchf EW pattern prediction plays out. Completed 5 sequence up would be followed by correction down to area of 8620/8800. DX similar position. Then reversal back to higher highs.

Ole Elliott was a bit mathematician he understood Elliott waves differently from trader's view.
I am not at all anti chartastrology but I became after Bear Sterns Lehman TALF TARP QE ...
has nothing to do with free markets anymore.
Did chartastrologers see how EURx shoot up after the newest China bails out Euro ? Was that in the charts? No it was not. Thus my bot trades only trends no ideas of future. Future is made by Central banks.

@Helmut, yep the free FXCM feed takes care of forex charting ok. For equities you should take a look at stockcharts.com who offer an excellent service for very modest cost. I pay for exchanges covering futures as well as equities but the overall cost to cover a wide range of instruments is significant and not necessary for equity traders. You should also find that most of the cfd brokers in the uk provide data for equities but they are market makers so their data will reflect what is happening in the futures mkts as apposed to the cash markets. The subject of data vendors is huge.

@jacek, yep and I tend to agree with cat when he said that Elliott never recommended his work to be applied to paired assets. EW has always been so subjective as to be dangerous for the vast majority of traders. I only utilise when I see a very clear pattern which offers tight trading parameters. The most common useful pattern for me is the simple corrective which occurs in all timeframes, all instruments, even in forex sometimes. Whenever I trade an EW pattern I am identifying two alternate scenarios which would invalidate my favoured count. This is why I seldom talk EW in a public forum because it leads to many potential misunderstandings and bashing the ole head against a brick wall :-)

The HFT has certainly helped to further cloud patterns but I would argue that EWT is all about human behaviour/emotions being the underlying structure of markets. The algos are designed by humans and believe it or not even resourceful bankers are half human. Your typical cheapy MT4 EA is designed by an idiot human but all mkts are comprised of both idiot and intelligent participants.

I am currently back researching currency strength charts once again, looking for more potential there for shorter term forex plays. Perhaps cat would like to comment on that.

A question for the equity price specialist. How can I get historical and current equity prices from different exchanges (US, CA, UK, Europe). I like to use it for a portfolio software development (personal use only). So far I found finance.yahoo but I don't know if better or more data is available. An WebService or Java API would be best.

PS: For FX I resolved the problem already by using the FXCM Java API, this API is superior.
