Here is some solid analysis on "debt". I have been reading John Mauldin since 2002 and he has never let me down yet !

UK and US are banana cases but the difference is UK have started seriously addressing the problem since our recent election whereas Obama was the wrong man to elect. Obama is a big spender. Many other nations are similarly challenged as we all know.

Good on you Dave, enjoy your weekend.

PS Don't forget to tell your son about the up-coming revolution against the FED.

Dave, Yes I'm all for people power but in the case of Iran it appears that everyone was duped by a religious zealot into believing that a more tolerant society would emerge from the ashes of the old one - hindsight is a wonderful thing.... Therefore any movement will need to choose their leader very carefully and be able to hold them accountable. It appears that the Egyptians definitely have far more moderate and sensible leaders which gives me hope their revolution will prove a good model for the Middle East.

Tony, my comment was in the context of "people power". Your wish for the people to bring about change.

Dave, your highlighting of Iran is probably not ideal to what I meant about secularism. Iran has had a history of interference in its politics including the CIA coup against its moderate Prime Minister in the 1950s due to his nationalising Iranian oil interests from BP. The rural population did not start the Iranian revolution. It was led by students and intellectuals but back fired because people were duped by a religious zealot, harboured and funded by the West.

I often think that religion is the root of all evil over the ages. I understand people need nice fairy stories to believe in and in some ways I envy their faith, particularly for their twylight years and their death. I believe in many lessons of the bible and the need to try to live an honest life and do as one would be done by. Many of the teachings are still a good map today.
